Cohort 14

Sonia Fountaine

Before GCF, I had dropped out of college after one semester because it wasn’t what I was looking for or wanted at the time. I was looking for jobs, too, but had no luck, so I was home for most of the day and throughout the week. Green City Force was the push I needed to move forward in my journey towards adulthood. Throughout the program I was given many opportunities and lessons that helped me realize that I wanted a career in the green sector. I had never heard of GCF until I saw their recruitment flyer. I was mostly interested in the culinary training, but after going to an information session I was soon intrigued by the farming aspect. Once I was accepted into the program, I got to experience so many new things I didn’t know I would love. One thing that I learned about myself during my service term is that I like to be around people and be a part of the conversation. I used to just observe people and keep to myself, but I learned to come out of my “shell” with the help of my Corps Members. They’re like a family to me. After GCF I would like to start my career in farming and composting, and maybe start working on my art portfolio, too. If I had to describe my grit it would be simple: I like to work hard and get the job done properly.
