GCF has been an opportunity to grow as a person and get out of my comfort zone, surrounded by staff who care about my mental and career growth. When I started this program I came in with an open mind and some doubts about myself, wondering if I can achieve the goals they set out for us. I can proudly say because of this program I have my OSHA/SST. I have gained plumbing, electrical and carpentry experience in this program. I can also confidently say that I can easily create a gardening bed due to the staff’s constant patience and guidance. My favorite thing to do at GCF is farmstand. I really enjoyed giving the community the produce I grew and educating them on how to cook and store them. The reason I wanted to become a Corps Member was to challenge myself and be part of a community that gives back to the planet. Before coming here I was working at a dead-end job that treated me more as someone who was expendable than a person who was just trying to do their best. At GCF, I was treated with more compassion and empathy than other jobs I have had. I want to give a shout-out to my brother Kawon for pushing me to join this program. I will always be thankful for his words of wisdom and always pushing me to be the best version of myself.
