My decision to join Green City Force was a life-changing one. GCF has equipped me with a variety of skills such as flexibility, sustainability knowledge, soft skills, familiarity with the Green Economy, and most of all job readiness. My time at GCF has been great. I’ve met all kinds of different people who share similar interests, and one common goal: change. Everyone in the program wanted to make a change whether either in their community or within themselves. The most uplifting experience for me was the Hurricane Sandy relief service that I and other Corps Members participated in alongside Friends of Rockaway.
I worked on multiple homes in the Rockaways, Queens. At the end of every day I left feeling good about myself and the work that I had done. The feeling of knowing you are helping someone get back to living in their home is priceless. The residents were very thankful and appreciative. Before GCF I was not doing anything but sitting at home and wasting time. I decided to become a Corps Member because I wanted to learn the true meaning of service, and that is what AmeriCorps is about.
