During my service term with Green City Force, I got first hand experience toward creating a “green city” rooted in community, and environmental justice. I’ve been given a vision of what green cities could resemble and what we need to see throughout our engagement in the service term. It has led me on paths to satisfying and rewarding careers out of low-income housing issues. Joining GCF wasn’t just about the opportunity given in the interview but because of my high school friend, Jose, who knew of the program from a previous Corps Member. Before GCF, I had been struggling to find another job after being let go from my previous job. Throughout my term, I built more of my community engagement skills, and was able to grow and improve my knowledge of farming and harvesting. While also building my problem-solving skills, we were equipped with the tools to change the trajectory of our own lives and access to good jobs. I am extremely grateful to Justin, Israel and my fellows Raven and Dwayne for giving Staten Island a more inclusive and respected environment in my community. Thank you to Kitson for always being supportive and an ear to vent to when life was “lifing.” Best for last will be my special shout out to my grandmother for being my huge support system, to my mother and younger siblings plus the aunts and cousins who have been proud of me since the beginning. GCF will definitely be one of my memories I think fondly of…“We are the Movement – We Are The Force.” Bless all I have spoken to and may I see everyone once again.
