Green City Force has been a unique experience. During my time with Cohort 27, I’ve learned a good amount of information from like minded individuals that care about the planet as I do. Before GCF, I was at home most days playing games, working on art projects and clearing streams in Central Park. After seeing a flier in my building and seeing they were focusing on building farm beds in NYCHA communities, I was immediately intrigued. Of course the stipend, metrocards, and certifications were a nice added bonus as much as being able to learn how to grow my own food and get my hands dirty. GCF has been a space for me to work with nature while also letting my creativity flow and put my carpentry skills to use. I learned that I won’t get along with everyone but I can be patient; I learned not every boss is going to see things through my perspective but I can be understanding; not everything I plant will grow but I can cheer on the ones that do. Flexibility is key to having a great job experience. I’m proud of the knowledge I’ve accumulated on and off the farm and I can’t wait to see where I go from here. Thank you to my Service Coordinator Chastidy for pushing me through at times and actually listening to my feedback and hearing me. I’d love to do this again.
