Cohort 28

Brittney Charles

I became a Corps Member because I want to be a Holistic Healer – meaning, using plants and herbs to make medicines, and to keep you healthy while only using plants. I was looking for a 9-5 job that I could absorb skills and learn about plants with, but I ended up finding GCF. The most important things I have learned at GCF are skills to be a leader in my community, ways to unravel and embrace my identity in my blackness and in my leadership. I also learned how to use power tools and I’ve worked on my social skills heavily as well. Before GCF I worked at multiple restaurants as a hostess, and I can say GCF job experience is way different than a regular hourly job. While helping the community through projects like gardening, we also get access to certifications and connections that will last a long time. I have really enjoyed my time at GCF. I’m so glad that I was able to gain green sector experience that will definitely help me get the 9-5 job I was looking for in the first place and grow into the healer I want to become.
