Tell us about your current role and daily responsibilities:

As a Site Inspector, I conduct both pre- and post-inspections to ensure that the scope of work for existing measures, such as HVAC and refrigeration equipment, lighting, elevator modernization, air sealing, Energy Management System (EMS), boiler tune-ups, and pipe insulation, aligns with energy codes and local laws. The goal is to help reduce carbon emissions, lower utility bills, and promote energy savings.

I also maintain service records and reports, capture technical information and locations using a survey tool, and input my findings into an internal tracking database. My role involves reporting on these findings either daily or weekly, ensuring all work meets the required standards and contributes to energy efficiency.

A typical workday involves either going on-site or working remotely to conduct the inspections. A key part of my day is verifying that everything matches the scope of work and addressing any discrepancies to maintain the integrity of the project.”

Describe your career pathway. How has your GCF experience helped you?

When I first joined GCF right after high school, I was 18 and still unsure of my path. I knew I wanted to help people and work with my hands, but I hadn’t yet discovered my true passion. GCF helped me find that passion by introducing me to sustainable living, self-sufficiency, and the importance of using renewable energy sources. They played a pivotal role in opening my mind and shaping my future.

GCF not only helped me discover my interest in energy efficiency but also helped me secure my first job as an Energy Auditor with Con Edison’s SMB program. After returning to GCF post-pandemic, I took on more of a leadership role due to the experience I had gained. My time there taught me the importance of being a team player and always offering a helping hand. GCF provided the foundational knowledge in sustainability that continues to guide me in my career today.

My career pathway is unique and began with my role as an Energy and Water Conservation Assistant at Green City Force in 2022. GCF provided me the opportunity to join the Clean Energy Academy, where I earned certifications that helped qualify me for my current position as a Site Inspector with Willdan under the Multifamily Energy Efficiency Program.

My previous experience with GCF and Franklin Energy as energy auditor played a key role in preparing me for this role. During that time, I installed energy-efficient LED light bulbs, checked for gas leaks on stoves for health and safety, and installed CO and smoke detectors, and thermostats, all of which contributed to reducing the load on the grid and lowering carbon emissions to meet today’s needs without compromising future generations.

My strong background in electrical and gas systems, gained during my AmeriCorps term and my work with GCF’s Social Enterprise, further qualified me for this position. I’ve also earned multiple certifications, including GPRO Electrical Systems, BPI Building Analyst, EPA 608 Universal, GPRO Plumbing, GPRO Construction Management, GPRO NALMCO CALT, BPI BSP, GPRO Operations & Maintenance, GPRO Fundamentals, EPA Renovator, Environmental Ambassador, and Solar One Advanced Electrical. These qualifications have provided me with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in my current role.

I often recommend GCF to young people aged 18-24 in my community because of the profound impact it had on my life. After losing my mother in high school, I felt lost, but GCF reminded me to believe in myself and showed me that I could achieve anything. The experience gave me hope and purpose, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.”

What advice do you have for current Corps Members and other Alumni?

My advice to current Corps Members is to always remember that your mind is your greatest tool. Believe in yourself, find your passion, and embrace what truly makes your soul come alive. You have the power to make a difference in the world—embrace your uniqueness and never be afraid to stand out. Your thoughts and words shape your reality, so focus on thinking positively. We are all meant to shine, just like the stars.”

Achievements at GCF:

During my time at GCF, I earned several certifications, including OSHA 30, GPRO Operations & Maintenance, GPRO Electrical Systems, GPRO Fundamentals, BPI Building Analyst, and Environmental Ambassador. These certifications have been instrumental in building my technical knowledge and skills.

Beyond the certifications, one of my key achievements was actively engaging in community outreach within my own neighborhood. I educated residents on zero-waste policies and disposal programs, and I participated in door-to-door food scrap collection to promote composting. These efforts helped make the community a cleaner and safer place to live.

What I value the most is the opportunity to work hands-on while inspiring and educating others. As an Environmental Ambassador, I’m passionate about promoting sustainability and meeting today’s needs without compromising the future generations. My work with GCF allowed me to become a positive influence within the NYCHA community, helping to empower residents to take ownership of their environment and improve the quality of life for themselves and future generations.”

What’s your favorite GCF memory?

“I have many favorite memories from my time at GCF, but a few stand out. One of them was taking the ferry to Staten Island with my fellow Corps Members, who felt like brothers and sisters – who I consider family now – and proudly reciting our mantras out loud. Another memorable experience was the bike tour of the farms, which gave us the chance to connect with nature and the work we were doing. I also fondly remember the day we created our cohort’s mantra for the community, which was a powerful bonding experience that brought us all together with a shared purpose.”

GRADUATION TESTIMONY:

“My experience with Green City Force was amazing. Serving with Green City Force has provided me with the opportunity to not only educate residents but to work hands-on with NYCHA residents and developed me to become a positive influence within my community. I chose to become a Corps Member with GCF because I wanted to be a bigger role model for my younger siblings. The most important thing I learned during my time with GCF was finding a passion for being an electrician. I want to thank my Team Leaders and everyone on GCF staff for being so supportive to me, helping me professionally and mentally. I’m grateful for being given this opportunity to meet these amazing people I connected with and now call family. My plan after GCF is to have sustainability in my life.”
