Dear GCF Community,
Happy Earth Month! As we head into spring and all it has to offer, we not only recognize the value of Earth and our interconnectedness, but celebrate the value, power, and commitment of our community in making our shared home a healthier and more equitable place.
This past week Cohort 23 and GCF staff have been showing our Earth some extra love by building a high tunnel at our Bay View Houses Eco-Hub. The tunnel will provide a greenhouse-like growing space for both spring and summer crop seedlings, as well as an opportunity for season extension and experimental growing. After the success of our first high tunnel at the Forest Houses Eco-Hub, we knew we had to continue the opportunity at our other sites.
Now you can once again join our Corps Members out in the field and see the growth firsthand through our Community Volunteer Days offered every Saturday from 10am to 2pm! Sign up is available for April and May – come honor the Earth and be in community with us, beginning tomorrow, April 2nd.
If you’re not able to make it, or are looking for other ways to support GCF throughout Earth Month, here are some opportunities:
- attend the FREE Ella Baker Day “Building a Racially Just Green Movement” virtual event on Wednesday, April 6th at 6:30pm featuring our Executive Director, Tonya Gayle!
- donate through Amazon Smile,
- buy a reusable Community Bag at the Stop & Shop store in Ozone Park,
- participate in the Buffalo Exchange Tokens for Bags program in Williamsburg, and
- donate to GCF directly.
We are grateful for all of your past and current support as we build a “future green city” rooted in racial, economic, and environmental justice. Here’s to Mother Nature for nourishing us and to all of you serving our Earth and frontline communities everyday.
“We need each other, as we need the earth we share.” – Maya Angelou
In service and solidarity,
