“Don’t follow the money – follow your passion!”

Tytionna Peterkin

Graduated: 2020, Cohort 20

From: Wagner Houses, Manhattan

Current Position: Edelman Fellowship

Edelman is a global communications firm that partners with businesses and organizations to evolve, promote and protect their brands and reputations. Our Mission: To provide strategic communications counseling and programming which enable our clients to build strong relationships across stakeholders, influence attitudes, inform audiences and shape behaviors with the potential to have a positive impact in our society.

Describe your current role. What does your typical workday look like?

“I’m currently on a team called Brand Purpose where I help clients in different brands bring their ideas to life. I’m currently working on Dove Men + Care and Vaseline where I take notes in different meetings and create research on different guest speakers or information that needs to be implemented in the [branding] work.”

Tell us about your career pathway. How has your GCF experience helped you?

I work a lot on community service work and working with people. I enjoy being creative and creating ideas for people. Green City Force helped me get the job I have currently by helping me with my resume, finding what my interests are and helping to apply my skills to the jobs that fit me best.”

What advice do you have for current Corps Members and other Alumni?

“To the 2024 Corps Members: I hope you find yourself in different ways when you are in the [GCF Service Corps] program – what you do like and don’t like, and also advocate for yourself, [be] comfortable to ask any question.”

What’s your favorite GCF memory?

“I enjoyed going to different workshops learning the history of farming. Also I enjoyed putting on the October [Harvest] Festival, getting the community together in the different farms, and everyone enjoying a good time.”

GRADUATION TESTIMONY:

“I went to college for two years but I didn’t finish school because I didn’t challenge or push myself to finish what I had to do. Green City Force taught me how to become a leader and how to motivate myself in many ways. I learned how a black farmer is an amazing thing to be and the history of farming, especially how impactful it was during the civil rights movement. I learned how to challenge myself and worked on public speaking, time management, organization, leadership skills, and agriculture. I learned so much about being a black farmer and both showed and explained my skills to people. It’s rewarding to know how to plant my own produce because it’s the most important thing in the world. During my time at Wagner Houses, Shontanyce was a great role model for our group because she pushed us to be our best selves and also kept it real with us. I want to thank the people who saw the potential in me to become a better person. I would like to shout out my team members who were there with me and helped me grow, love you.”
